Yeni Mao
fig. 36.5 skinwalker, 2024
Nickel-plated steel, cobra skin, bronze, turquoise
104 x 206 x 18 cm
Yeni Mao works in sculpture that combines references to the body with those of architecture, particular through construction. Tensions between restraint, domination, order, and the viscerality of the body are expressed through fetishistic forms and material combinations. His work is further charged by personal narratives articulated through tactile associations with the making of his sculpture, which are crafted in his studio through a direct engagement with materials and processes. The two works here, are examples. The handrail in Fig. 36.5 skinwalker, suggests functionality, yet morphs into life through the bloated snakeskin covering part of its tubular form.
