Abigail Lane’s practice focuses on the traces of human activity and mark making, both physical and psychological. As with many of her generation, known as the Young British Artists, her work has a contemporary Gothic sensibility, combining horror and dark humor. The Ink Pads series began when Lane encountered a company offering ink pads in any size—prompting her to order one large enough for her body. Exhibited open on the wall, these oversized pads function as both sculpture and painting, their surfaces re-inked over time to remain active. These works reflect her interest in how a sculptural object can resonate with both the body and institutional, in this case bureaucratic forms. More recently, Lane has continued to explore themes of transformation, illusion, and evidence through works that incorporate domestic materials and forensic logic.
