Heidi Bucher was widely recognized for her latex molds of architecture features, including entire houses, both interior and exterior. She referred to the process as “skinning” and the latex, a natural liquid rubber, appears as skin when dried which also grabs and removes fragments of the surface details of the buildings in the process. Bucher’s choice of buildings was specific, such as her father’s study or the consulting rooms of the psychiatrist Dr. Binswanger who specialized in hysteria. Through this Bucher brought a feminist critique into her work. Bucher originally trained in fashion and textiles, evident in her skinnings and in her broader practice that clothed the body in malleable sculptural forms.
