Daniel Guzmán’s works often exhibit his obsession with punk clearly, but there are many other literature references in his practice which he appropriates and transforms to generate new meanings. In I.S., 2006, Guzmán takes a line from a 1959 Guy Debord film that reads “When freedom is practiced in a closed circle, it fades into a dream, becomes a mere image of itself”. The title of the work alludes to the revolutionary Situationist International, a movement Debord was closely associated with. By utilizing the metal structures common in outdoor markets, Guzmán references informal labor that is so prevalent in Mexico.
