The Perfect Kiss, 1974
James Lee Byars was described as a “romantic minimalist.” His practice includes expressive and often temporary performance, gesture, painting, sculpture and installation. The works crossed boundaries across personal, social, and conceptual acts. The Perfect Kiss was first performed by the artist who entered the gallery to blow a kiss to the audience in an act that lasted mere seconds. Through this small gesture, Byars gave form to ideals of love and perfection.
