Andreas Gursky is known for making large-scale images of outdoor scenes and domestic interiors alike. Gashered [Stove] is an early photograph that features the lit gas stove in his Düsseldorf home. A sort of modern still-life, it brings the details of an ordinary appliance into focus, highlighting its geometric design. Gursky grew up in a household dedicated to commercial and studio photography, and later studied with Hilla and Bernd Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from whom he has said he learned to compose images. The Becher’s documentation of German industrial architecture and machinery can be traced in this image.
