Gabriel de la Mora employs fragile and discarded materials and gives them second lives in abstract compositions that refer to the history of abstraction in Latin America. His series Lepidoptera employ hundreds of Lepidoptera butterfly wings which are particular for their large size and reflective qualities. Taking advantage of the patterns and coloring
of the wings, the artist carefully cuts them into small geometric shapes to create a surface of changing incidence of light and transforming them from natural
into cultural artifacts.
