Liliana Porter
Trabajo forzado [Forced Labour], 2003
Miniature figure and earth
Liliana Porter is one of the most significant figures in Argentinian contemporary art. Her multimedia practice speaks to the disconnect between reality and its representation and combines conceptual and critical approaches with a Pop Art sensibility. Porter incorporates her collections of figurines and antique toys as a means of representing the mundanity of everyday life. In Trabajo Forzado [Forced Labour], the miniature figure, seemingly shoveling earth from the shelf onto an outsized heap below speaks to the existential futility of our day-to-day activities.
