Gonzalo Lebrija studies time and the subjective experience of a passing moment in his artistic practice. Employing video, photography, installation, sculpture, and even painting, he captures the ephemeral and puts it in a display that is crafted for deep contemplation. Many of his works center around the idea of paused action, as is the case with Big Lamento in which a man leans against the wall, head on his forearm, seemingly mid-emotional breakdown. Poetic and playful, Lebrija combines humor, anxiety and melancholy in preserved finite moments that are suspended at their emotional climax. Attempting the impossible, he stills time even as it continues to pass, allowing for a reflection on the systems that organize our lives and through which we inhabit our day-to-day.
