A simple biological fact becomes a creative act in Knut Åsdam’s video, which captures a close-up of his crotch as the fabric of his trousers gradually darkens while he urinates. Disembodied and silent, the video captures an indiscernible moment that is at once aesthetic, illustrative of fluid movement, and suggestive of embarrassment. In this, it shares something with the work of Bas Jan Ader, whose pared-down actions were dubbed ‘emotional conceptualism’ for their focus on process and allusion to tragic-comic moments. Åsdam’s work frequently explores interstices in time and space, removing what we see from any narrative context to focus instead on an uncomfortable and indeterminate present.
